Measure J is Vital to the Success of San Leandro Schools

Please join me in voting Yes on Measure J on the March 5th, 2024 election ballot. Measure J is a $174 million bond measure to fund essential improvements and renovations to the San Leandro schools and construct affordable rental housing for teachers and staff without raising the tax rate households currently pay on school bonds.

Measure J will significantly improve the quality of education in San Leandro by ...

Repairing and Upgrading Aging Neighborhood Schools

The school district has spent our tax dollars wisely. Remarkable progress has been made in our schools. But the work is not done. Most schools were constructed over 70 years ago.

Measure J will renovate older classrooms with new flooring, windows, doors and lighting systems. Worn out roofs and plumbing and electrical systems at our schools will be repaired and fixed before they fail.

Building Needed New Classrooms

Measure J provides funding to upgrade computers and computer systems at all schools for high quality instruction in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). At San Leandro High School, a beautiful, new building will be constructed that will contain a new library, classrooms for music and choir instruction, and a student center (a conceptual design of the new building is shown above).

Measure J will also build new classrooms at our elementary schools so that all San Leandro four-year-old children can access public school as required of school districts now by California.

Building Affordable Teacher-Staff Housing

The Bay Area housing crisis is causing severe shortages of educators, undermining the quality of education our students receive. By constructing affordable rental housing, Measure J will help the district attract and retain outstanding teachers and staff for our children, allowing these educators to live and work in San Leandro.

Measure J Makes Financial Sense

● Measure J will not increase tax rates homeowners currently pay. Measure J simply extends current tax rates previously approved by voters for an additional period to make priority repairs and improvements to our schools.

● Measure J funds cannot be taken by the State and spent elsewhere.

● Measure J will allow many projects to qualify for state matching funds, ensuring that San Leandro receives its fair share.

● By law, Measure J funds cannot be spent on administrators’ salaries, pensions, or benefits.

● Measure J will provide full public disclosure of all spending as legally required.

● Measure J requires accountability, including a Citizens’ Oversight Committee and independent annual financial audits.

Please join me along with the San Leandro Teachers Association, the San Leandro Education Foundation, the Alameda County Labor Council, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Assemblymember Liz Ortega, Mayor Juan Gonzalez, III, all San Leandro City Council members and School Board Trustees, and former Ellen Corbett in voting Yes on Measure J!
